2021.12.03 19:38 StatFlow Why are the feedback threads popular/active?

After reading through the “What are you trying to achieve with your music” post and its comments…a common thread among a lot of the responses was that people are just doing it as a creative outlet, or for themselves…that kind of thing.
So I’m curious as to why you all think so many people are asking for feedback. I know subreddits aren’t monoliths and that different people could be asking for feedback than are posting in that thread, but I think the “I make music for myself” sentiment is pretty common here. If that’s the case, what benefit does feedback provide?

2021.12.03 19:38 chemprofdave Arraignment after protest arrest?

Someone I know (not me, honest) got arrested at an anti-brutality protest last year and after a night in the slammer they were released without bail. They said they weren’t doing anything (except yelling/chanting) but the cops surrounded the crowd so nobody could get out, ordered them to disperse, and immediately started arresting people. Then the other day they got a summons for a video hearing for an arraignment. The web says this is their chance to enter the guilty/not guilty plea and maybe get a trial scheduled. Has anybody in Redditland gone through this? What did you do and how did it go? Should my friend get a lawyer?

2021.12.03 19:38 greenapple_383939 Is software development still a viable career for someone with chronic illness? Or should I rethink getting a cs degree and becoming a software developer?

I tried posting this a few minutes ago but I guess it didn't work? It just disappeared and I can't see it on my profile. If this is already posted and I just can't see it, let me know and I'll remove it.
Anyway - I struggle with chronic illness. I'm hoping at some point I have more answers as to what's going on with me and that I'll be doing a bit better by the time I'd graduate, but I'm kind of worried about whether I should do this in the first place due to my illness. I have a nervous system disorder that affects my whole body and makes me feel sick all the time, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain.
What drew me to this field initially were the fact that it pays decently and has good upward mobility, there are jobs everywhere, often good health insurance coverage, and that working from home is an option.
But I don't want to go through with getting a cs degree if I might not be able to handle it or if I'm not cut out for it.
For example, sometimes I just don't feel well enough to do much at all and have to just rest for a few hours. I also usually have to pace myself to avoid becoming too fatigued, such as by taking frequent breaks. And sometimes I'm just not feeling well enough to be able to be properly "on" and interact with others and not seem out of it, even if I'm fine sitting at a computer and doing my thing.
Also, sometimes I feel like I'm kind of slow. For example, right now I'm learning with the book Programming Principles and Practice Using C++. I'm only on chapter 3 currently, but it's taken me hours worth to understand different concepts, doing the exercises, etc until I fully understand it. Even then sometimes it's hard to wrap my head around some stuff. Also, I'm worried that when I get into the more complicated stuff I might not be smart enough or good enough at it. I always hated math and was bad at keeping attention to detail and always hated repetition because I get bored easily, but programing doesn't feel like that to me. I think that's probably because it really makes me think, and I've always enjoyed problem solving. I'm still wary though that I might not be able to handle the more complicated concepts because I'm not someone who is quick to understand things, especially abstract ideas.
I do have a few specific questions for those who work in software development. How much time do you spend directly working with other people? How common are jobs that can be entirely WFH, and is it possible to find one fresh out of college or is that mostly reserved for those with more experience or seniority? how about flexible hours? Also, how common are part time software dev jobs? Would you consider your job to be relatively repetitive, or is there a fair bit of variety?
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

The idea is in its infancy , but I’m a 31f in the US ( I feel now that the convo doesn’t have to be in person 😅). I’m and infp —- like that really matters but some extrovert energy would be so much appreciated . Well if anyone has any ideas or comments on helping this idea along or interested that would be awesome thank you ! Or questions too!

2021.12.03 19:38 Ralph-Hinkley My cousin Walter jerked off in public once, true story.

He was on a plane to New Mexico when all of a sudden the hydraulics went out. The plane started spinning around, going out of control, so he decides it's all over and whips it out and starts beating it right there. All the other passengers take a cue from him and they start whipping it out and beating like mad. So all the passengers are beating off, plummeting to their certain doom, when all of a sudden, snap!
The hydraulics kick back in. The plane rights itself and it lands safely and everyone puts their pieces or, whatever, you know, away and deboard. No one mentions the phenomenon to anyone else.

2021.12.03 19:38 InterPunct Did humans really never boil water to make it potable until modern times?

The common conception is humans never intentionally boiled water to prevent illness until after germ theory was developed in the 1800's. Given the amazing ability for discovery, creativity and innovation that humans exhibited for so many other things (natural medications, developing iron tools, writing, etc.,) is it really probable that no culture, at any time in history, definitively knew boiling water made it safe to drink?
Of course, it's possible, but I actually do mean likely or probable.

2021.12.03 19:38 Goreggon Teenage Worker Thinking of Joining

Hello, I am a 17 yr old Dunkin' Donuts worker from Massachusetts. I've heard about the IWW from some online anarchist comrades (i'm an anarchist myself btw) and I want to join. I agree very strongly with the principles of the IWW, and I wish to help cause. I think the only way we can have a just society is one where the workers run their workplaces without the tyranny of bosses and wage labor. Can a teenage worker join the union, and where should I start?
