2022.01.29 08:07 Sil3nos Last 5 Bingo mini reviews + a bonus review of my very first Bingo experience
So, I finished my last Bingo book just about half an hour ago, so here's my last 5 reviews! If you didn't read my first posts and still want to you can find them [here](https://www.reddit.com/Fantasy/comments/oovtss/first_10_bingo_mini_reviews/) and [here](https://www.reddit.com/Fantasy/comments/qxnqtl/10_more_bingo_mini_reviews/).
These are once again also on my [Goodreads](https://www.goodreads.com/useshow/63294595?ref=nav_profile_l), some of them slightly edited. There are also reviews of all the other books I read there, if, for some reason, you found yourself interested
But as always, let's go through chronologically:
## Season of Storms - Andrzej Sapkowski
Overall Rating: ★★★★☆ Squares: Title: __ of __, Witches Used for: Title: __ of __
Review: I went into this book with very low expectations because I hadn't heard anything good about it. But I found myself really liking it. There were a lot of fun elements to this story, even if it dragged at some points. Also I really enjoyed the ending, even though I think it was just an answer to the semi-negative reviews Sapkowski got for the ending of the main series?
## House of Leaves - Mark Z. Danielewski
Overall Rating: ★★★★★ Squares: First Person POV, Backlist Book (h), Cat Squasher, Genre Mashup (h), Title: __ of __, Debut author Used for: New to you author (h) (not listed above because doesn't fit for everyone)
Review: When this book hits, it hits! This book is about, well, about what exactly? It's about a guy commenting on notes of someone commenting on a film, but then there's the editors that comment on the guy's comments and well you, the reader, are supposed to make comments too. Apart from that, there is also a lot about mental illness, the artistic struggle, whether or not media is made up or not, whether or not this even matters and an endless hallway that may or may not exist. Also, philosophy.I don't know how long it took Danielewski to write this, but it would surprise me if it was less than 5 years. There is such a stupendous attention to detail it's insane. And, the narrative itself is also, quite literally, insane. You only need to open the book at one of the Exploration passages to see that. The layout is so confusing and yet adds so much to the reading experience. However, Zampanó's philosophical consideration parts sometimes where genuinely interesting (when it concerned the Minotaur or the psychology of the characters mostly) but sometimes they just dragged on. But, because this book is house of leaves, I would say that this is intentional. Danielewski wants you to take your time going through this. It even says so on one page (I think it was "Too read a book to fast or too slow is to not read it at all").The prose is gorgeous at some points. There are endless sentences (they stretch out over 1-2 pages) that still kind of evoked an emotion of me. Just consider this part of a cup spilling over:" It holds - a bulge of coffee arcing tragically over china, preserved by the physics of surface tension, rhyme to some unspeakable magic, though as everyone knows, coffee miracles never last long. The morning wake-up call wobbles, splits, and then abruptly slips over the edge, now a Nile of caffeine wending past glass and politics until there is nothing more than a brown blot on the morning paper."In general this book got a lot of emotions out of me and that does not happen often. I was annoyed, scared, sad, frustrated, intrigued and basically anything else you can think of. I don't know what this book would do to someone that isn't a robot like me.And this whole text has not yet discussed the oftentimes splitting narrative, cause I don't really know what happened in this book. It is meta in such a clever way. This is the kind of book you write a 5 hour Youtube essay about and you still haven't uncovered everything. And the book knows this, hence the endless hallways. And it's always like that. I have a thought and instantly I remember a part where this was adressed. It's like Danielewski KNEW what I would say. And, on a more meta level, it is like he already knew like I was going to say that because this book is about commentary of other works.Especially John's mum's letters are going to stay with me for a very long time (sorry this review was kind of long but I really had a lot to say)
## A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking - T. Kingfisher
Overall Rating: ★★★★☆ Squares: First Person POV, Self-Published, Witches(h) Used for: First Person POV
Review: If I had a nickel for each piece of media I know that ends with giant walking bread men I'd have 2 nickles, which isn't much, but it's weird it happened twice. This book is by far the most light hearted thing I've read in a long time (right, well, there is some murder, but even light hearted fiction deserves some murder). And it's good, too.I read the last 50 pages yesterday evening in one sitting and I was really enjoying it, but I did not really like what happened at the tail end. It just felt too much like a "Why didn't you do that earlier?" than a satisfying climax.Apart from that. Propably the book with the most uses of the word dough you'll ever read. Also propably the best book about a wizard thats also a Baker you'll ever read. And I guess that's something.
## The Origins of Birds in the Footprints of Writing - Raymond St. Elmo
Overall Rating: ★★☆☆☆ Squares: First Person POV, Self-Published (not h because of 11 damn ratings), Has Chapter Titles, Title: __ of __, Used for: Self-Published
Review: I have a lot of conflicting thoughts about this book. There were a few parts I really like and a lot I didn't (like the reader never really knowing what is actually happening). Also, there character work feels (intentionally, I guess) wonky.I don't know. I can see people liking this, but I just didn't really.
## Queen of Blood - Sarah Beth Durst
Overall Rating: ★★★☆☆ Squares: Forest Setting (h), Title: __ of __ Used for: Forest Setting (h)
Review: Well, let me begin this by stating that Daleina is the most YA not-special-but-of-course-special-because-she-is-the-protagonist name I've ever heard.Apart from that I was... genuinely surprised. I expected not to like this book but I found it to be a loot bloodier than I expected, a lot more mature and with world that was quite deep. But I didn't care for any of the characters (except for Merecot, but well... you know what I mean if you read the book) and the story itself was kind of dragging at times.I also was really excited to see the other parts of Renthia, but then I found out that the second part of this series also plays in Aratay. This could've been a quintology each focusing on a part of the world but well... if it isn't the authors vision then not.And hey, maybe I'll get around to the other two books and they're absolutely great. Who knows?
## Meta Review: The Bingo Proces - Fantasy
Overall Rating: ★★★★☆
Review: I was really excited when I found out that this challenge existed and so, logically, I wanted to participate. I found a lot of the squares to fill almost automatically and at first it was also a great joy just to fill in the squares with the books I was really stoked to read. I also always wondered what the last square to fill in would be (it ended up being Forest setting). However, as time passed, I found myself less excited for the books that fit the squares (both because I found it sad I couldn't continue series I had started within the Bingo and count them and because I just didn't find books that sounded exciting to me).So I started not wanting to do Hard Mode anymore and it got a bit better. But I still had to fight through some of the books to complete my sheet. I'm happy I did, though. And I have never had such diversity in my reading before. I don't think I ever read anything close to 25 different authors in a year, so that was great. But now I'm happy to read something that doesn't need to fit a square. As for this year, I think I'll try to do the Bingo, but not let it influence what I read too much.Overall, I'm still really happy this exists and a big thank you to everyone that is hosting it!
Also, here's my filled-out card:
(It really is a struggle every time hoping the reddit formatting works...)

2022.01.29 08:07 newibsaccount Piles of soft fingertip sized pieces of poop, often with urgency, 3+ times every day
Any ideas what might help? I have tried without success:
high soluble / low insoluble fiber (sometimes works, still 3+ times daily but slightly larger and more soft)
low fat diet (if I let fat intake get high the consistency turns to custard, so I guess this is helpful to an extent)
low fiber diet
high fiber diet
peppermint capsules and tea
psyllium (mixed results - sometimes improves consistency, sometimes tips it into full on diarrhea, seems to worsen urgency)
cutting all coffee, alcohol, condiments, etc (not consuming these things is my default)
I've tested negative for celiac (while on high gluten diet) and blood tests did not suggest IBD
loperamide helps but it's difficult to get the dosage right and too much makes me exhausted, nauseous and headachey. Probably the most promising approach so far.
paroxetine (felt much worse)
birth control (suppressing periods removes painful monthly flares but does not grant the ability to have a normal bowel movement)
I'm out of ideas

2022.01.29 08:07 RhysHalliwell My girlfriend hates porn
Doesn’t turn her on. She gets turned on by like, a fairytale romance. I think a fairy tale is kind of the opposite of porn. Because in porn, it’s the main character who’s trying to destroy the stepmother.
Wrote this a few days ago, was pretty happy with it. Thought it fit my style and sandwiched it in amongst a bunch of similar dark, sexual jokes which did well and it still didn’t get a laugh. Maybe too convoluted for a noisy drunk crowd?

2022.01.29 08:07 Daniel-Mentxaka Apart from the shit story this game is pretty good.
I‘m now 12 hours in and enjoying the gameplay/ atmosphere after getting desensitized to the constant cringe dialogue/ plot points. When I began playing I was appalled by the abysmal writing (nothing I read online could have prepared me for the nauseating disregard of story, world building, character development etc.) and thought I might not play this turd through. Now I‘m glad I soldiered on. Definitely worth the 10 € I paid for it (would have been truly pissed if I had paid full price). I thought everyone who boycotted this game was right as I think movie and game developers should understand sacrificing the quality of writing to appease the gender- and race study graduates on your team is a truly bad idea, but I think you guys don’t praise enough the strange kind of masterpiece this game is at times.
